Regular sand grains' surface is made wet by water. It means that the water molecules are attracted to the sand grains.

Magic sand is regular sand that has been coated with an oil-like substance. It hates the water making the surface of the grains of magic sand, hydrophobic, and apolar hence the hydrogen bonds cannot be formed between the sand particles or with water molecules. Upon exposure, the Trimethylsilane compound bond to the silica particles while forming water. The exteriors of the sand grains are then coated with hydrophobic groups.

Kinetic sand and magic sand are both coated beach sand. The coating of kinetic sand that's dimethylsiloxane is also hydrophobic. 

With kinetic sand, the thick, viscous coating's main role is to help the sand stick together so it can be cut and molded without making a mess. Kinetic sand also has no analogy in nature.
